Understanding What Your Washing Machine Is Telling You
Modern washing machines use error codes to communicate fault information. When a machine detects a problem it cannot resolve on its own, it stops the programme, displays a code on the control panel, and waits. The code is not a diagnosis in itself, it identifies which system has triggered a fault condition, not the specific component that has failed within that system. Understanding what a code means is the starting point for proper diagnosis, not the end of it.
This guide covers the most common fault codes for the brands in widespread use in Namibia. Where the same fault is covered in more detail on a dedicated page, links are provided.
Samsung Washing Machine Error Codes
dC / dE / DC1 — Door fault The machine cannot confirm the door is properly closed and locked. This may indicate a faulty door interlock switch, a door latch that is not engaging correctly, or a control board input fault. The machine will not start or will stop mid-cycle when this code appears.
5E / SE — Drainage fault The machine has failed to drain within the expected time. This points to a blocked pump filter, a jammed or failed drain pump, or a drainage hose obstruction. The not draining guide covers the full range of causes in detail.
UE — Unbalanced load The machine has detected an unbalanced drum load during the spin phase and has stopped rather than proceeding. This code often appears when a single heavy item such as a duvet or towel is washed alone. If the code appears consistently with normal mixed loads, a suspension component fault is more likely. 3E / E3 — Motor fault The control board has detected an abnormal condition in the motor system. This can indicate worn carbon brushes, a tacho sensor fault, a motor winding problem, or a motor control board fault. Workshop diagnosis is needed to identify the specific component.
LE — Leakage detected The machine has detected water in the base pan through a flood protection sensor. This code typically means water is escaping from a seal, hose, or pump housing. The washing machine leaking guide covers the common sources.
tE — Temperature sensor fault The thermistor monitoring wash water temperature has returned an out-of-range reading. This may indicate a failed thermistor or a heating element fault.
LG Washing Machine Error Codes
OE — Drain fault The machine has not drained within the allowed time. Identical in cause profile to the Samsung 5E code: blocked filter, pump impeller obstruction, pump motor failure, or hose issue. See not draining for full diagnostic coverage.
UE — Unbalanced load Same presentation as Samsung’s UE code. The machine has detected drum imbalance during spin. If this occurs repeatedly with normal loads, a suspension fault is the likely cause.
LE — Motor fault (locked rotor) The motor has stopped unexpectedly, typically because it has encountered resistance it cannot overcome or because it has lost speed feedback from the hall sensor. This code appears on direct drive LG machines and requires motor and control board assessment.
PE — Water level sensor fault The pressure switch that monitors drum water level is sending an abnormal signal. A failed pressure switch, a blocked or kinked pressure chamber hose, or contamination in the pressure chamber can all produce this code.
dE / dE1 / dE2 — Door fault The door interlock is not confirming a locked state. Same cause profile as Samsung’s dC code.
IE — Inlet fault The machine has not filled to the expected level within the allowed time. This points to a closed water supply tap, low water pressure, a failed inlet valve solenoid, or a blocked inlet filter screen.
Bosch and Siemens Washing Machine Error Codes
Bosch and Siemens machines share the same underlying platform and use the same fault code system.
E02 — Door fault The door interlock has not confirmed a locked state. The machine will not run until this is resolved.
E03 / F18 / E18 — Drainage fault The machine has failed to drain. This is the Bosch and Siemens equivalent of Samsung’s 5E and LG’s OE codes. Pump filter, pump impeller, and pump motor are the first items to check.
E17 — Inlet fault The machine has not filled correctly within the allowed time. Inlet valve and water supply are the primary investigation points.
F21 / E21 — Pump fault A more specific drainage system fault indicating the pump has been detected as non-functional or has failed mid-drain cycle.
F28 / E28 — Motor control fault The motor control unit has detected an abnormal condition. This code requires workshop diagnosis to distinguish between the motor control board and the motor itself.
F43 — Drum not rotating The control system has detected that the drum is not turning despite the motor receiving a drive signal. Drive belt, motor, and motor control board are the investigation points. See not spinning for related cause coverage.
Defy Washing Machine Error Codes
Defy is the most widely sold domestic appliance brand across Southern Africa and the codes vary between model generations. Older Defy models use a simplified display with limited code information. Newer Defy front-loaders display F-series codes in a similar format to Bosch, reflecting the platform similarities of some model ranges.

What an Error Code Does Not Tell You
An error code identifies the system that has triggered a fault, not the component responsible within that system. A drain code means the drainage system has a problem, it does not tell you whether the pump filter is blocked, the pump impeller is jammed, the pump motor has failed, or the drain hose is kinked. Each of those causes produces the same code and requires a different repair.
Replacing parts based on the code alone, without systematic diagnosis, is a common source of unnecessary expense. Our technicians work through each fault system in sequence to confirm the specific component before any repair work is recommended.
