Water Left in the Drum After a Cycle

A washing machine that completes its programme but leaves standing water in the drum, or one that stops mid-cycle with clothes sitting in water, has a drainage fault. It is one of the more immediately disruptive washing machine problems because the machine cannot be safely opened with water inside, the load cannot be finished, and the situation does not resolve on its own.

Drainage faults have a relatively limited set of causes, most of which are component-level problems that are straightforward to diagnose and repair once the machine is in the workshop. The fault is rarely a sign that the machine is approaching end of life.


Common Causes of Drainage Failure

Drain Pump Blockage

The drain pump is the most common starting point for a drainage fault diagnosis. In normal use, small objects that pass through clothing, coins, hair grips, fragments of tissue, underwire from bras, can travel past the drum and accumulate at the pump impeller, jamming it or restricting its ability to move water. When the impeller is blocked, the pump motor may run but produce no water movement, or it may cut out on thermal protection as it works against the blockage.

Most washing machines have an accessible pump filter, usually behind a small panel at the lower front of the machine, designed to catch debris before it reaches the impeller. A blocked filter has the same effect as a jammed pump and is worth checking as the first step. A filter that has never been cleaned in several years of service will almost certainly be contributing to drainage problems.

Drain Pump Motor Failure

When the pump impeller is clear but the machine still fails to drain, the pump motor itself may have failed. Drain pump motors are relatively modest components that work reliably for years but do eventually fail, particularly in environments where the pump runs under partial blockage for extended periods, which shortens motor life. A failed pump motor produces no sound from the pump during the drain phase, or a humming sound without water movement. Pump replacement is a cost-effective repair on most machines.

Drain Hose Obstruction or Incorrect Position

The drain hose carries water from the pump to the household drain. A kinked hose, a hose that has been pushed too far into the standpipe, or a hose positioned lower than the recommended height can all create drainage problems without any fault in the machine itself. A hose inserted too deeply into the standpipe creates a siphoning effect that causes continuous water loss during the fill cycle and prevents the drum from maintaining correct water level, which disrupts the overall programme sequence including drainage.

Sump Hose Blockage

The sump hose connects the bottom of the outer tub to the drain pump. It can accumulate a build-up of detergent residue, lint, and debris over time, particularly in machines that have run with excessive detergent for an extended period. A partial sump hose blockage typically produces slow or incomplete drainage rather than a total failure.

Pressure Switch Fault

The pressure switch monitors the water level inside the drum and signals to the control board when the drum is empty. A faulty pressure switch can cause the machine to misread water level, potentially causing it to bypass the drain cycle entirely or end the programme before drainage is complete. Pressure switch faults are confirmed through testing at the workshop rather than visual inspection.

Control Board Fault

In a minority of drainage fault cases, the pump and hose system are fully functional but the control board is not sending the drain command correctly. This is usually identifiable by the fact that the pump can be tested directly and operates normally, while the machine fails to activate it during the cycle. Control board faults are assessed at the workshop and in many cases are repairable at component level.


What Diagnosis Involves

Our technicians begin drainage fault diagnosis by checking the accessible filter and pump impeller for blockage, then testing pump motor function directly. Hose routing and condition are assessed, the pressure switch is tested, and the control board drain output is verified if the pump checks out as serviceable. This sequence identifies the fault without speculative parts replacement.

Drainage fault repairs tend to require parts that are widely available, but for less common pump models in Namibia, some components may need to be sourced from Johannesburg. We advise you of that before any work begins.
