What a Failure to Spin Usually Means
A washing machine that fills with water and runs through a wash cycle but fails to spin, or one that stops altogether before the spin stage, is one of the more frustrating faults a household appliance can develop. Clothes sit wet and heavy in the drum, the machine often displays an error code, and the cause is not obvious from the outside.
The good news is that spin failure is rarely a catastrophic fault. It is almost always traceable to a specific component: a worn motor part, a failed switch, a broken mechanical connection between the motor and the drum. Identifying which component is responsible requires systematic diagnosis, but the repair itself is straightforward once the cause is confirmed.
Common Causes of Spin Failure
Carbon Brush Wear
On washing machines fitted with a brush-type motor, carbon brushes are the most common cause of spin failure. The brushes make electrical contact with the rotating commutator inside the motor and wear down gradually through normal use. As they shorten, contact becomes intermittent, the motor may run weakly, cut out mid-cycle, or stop turning entirely. In the later stages of brush wear, the machine may produce a burning smell or visible sparking inside the motor housing.
Carbon brush replacement is one of the more cost-effective washing machine repairs available. The fault becomes more expensive only when brush wear is left unaddressed long enough for the commutator surface itself to be damaged, at which point the motor requires more extensive attention.
Drive Belt Failure
Many washing machines use a rubber belt to transfer drive from the motor pulley to the drum. When this belt breaks or slips off the pulley, the motor runs but the drum does not turn. The machine may sound normal during the cycle while producing no drum movement at all. A slipping belt, rather than a fully broken one, can cause intermittent or weak spin before failing completely.
Drive belt replacement is a straightforward repair that restores full spin performance immediately once the correct belt is fitted.
Door Interlock Failure
The door interlock is a safety switch that signals to the control board that the door is properly closed before the machine will start or continue a cycle. A failed interlock either prevents the machine from starting entirely or causes it to stop mid-cycle. The door may feel closed and latched, but if the interlock is not sending the correct signal, the machine will not proceed to spin.
Door interlock failure can also manifest as the machine appearing to work normally through the wash stage but refusing to engage the spin cycle, since many machines perform a secondary interlock check before high-speed spin.
Motor Control Board and Inverter Motor Faults
On machines fitted with an inverter motor or brushless direct drive motor, spin failure points toward either the motor control board or the motor itself. Distinguishing between the two requires electrical testing at the workshop. Control board faults on these machines are diagnosable and in many cases repairable at component level. Motor faults on direct drive units require assessment to determine whether the motor can be restored or needs replacement.
Tacho Generator Failure
The tacho generator is a small sensor attached to the motor that monitors rotational speed and feeds that information back to the control board. When the tacho generator fails, the control board loses the ability to regulate spin speed and will typically cut the motor as a safety response. The machine may attempt to spin briefly before stopping, or display a motor error code.
Drum Bearing Seizure
In cases where drum bearing wear has been left unaddressed for a long period, the bearing can seize sufficiently to place enough load on the motor to prevent spin engagement. This is a late-stage presentation of a bearing fault that would have been audible for some time before reaching this point. What Diagnosis Involves
When a machine comes into our Walvis Bay workshop for a spin fault, our technicians work through the motor and drive system systematically. This includes testing the door interlock signal, inspecting carbon brush length and commutator condition, checking the drive belt for integrity and tension, assessing motor control board outputs, and testing the tacho generator signal. On direct drive machines, the motor windings are tested directly.
The diagnostic process identifies the specific component responsible rather than replacing parts speculatively. That matters in Namibia, where some components need to be sourced from Johannesburg and a wrong first diagnosis adds both cost and waiting time.
