Why Pump Oil Degrades in Commercial Chamber Sealers

Rotary vane pump oil performs two functions simultaneously: it lubricates the vanes and rotor surfaces as they rotate inside the pump chamber, and it provides the sealing layer between the vane tip and the pump chamber wall that allows the pump to achieve deep vacuum levels. As the oil ages through use, it accumulates particulate matter from vane wear and absorbs moisture drawn from the chamber during the sealing cycle. Both of these processes degrade the oil’s ability to maintain the oil-sealed film that is fundamental to pump performance.

Routine oil maintenance is the most effective preventative action available for extending pump service life, but machines that have been operating on degraded oil for extended periods may present with faults that go beyond what an oil change will resolve. Oil Change Intervals for Busch R5 Series Pumps

Busch R5 rotary vane pumps are widely used in commercial chamber sealers across Southern Africa, including Henkelman and various generic DZ-format machines. The R5 RA 0025 and R5 RA 0040 are the most common variants found in single-chamber and double-chamber commercial units.

Busch specifies oil change intervals based on operating hours rather than calendar time. For continuous commercial use, the general guidance is oil change at every 500 operating hours, with an inspection of the oil condition at 250 hours. In practice, a butchery or catering operation running 6 to 8 hours of sealing per day should plan for an oil service every 2 to 3 months. Operations using the machine in food-processing environments with high particulate matter in the air, such as flour dust or spice particles, should reduce this interval further.

The correct oil grade for Busch R5 pumps is a mineral vacuum pump oil meeting ISO VG 68 viscosity classification. Substituting general-purpose hydraulic or compressor oil is a common error that leads to foaming, loss of viscosity at operating temperature, and premature vane wear. Busch supplies dedicated pump oil under their own brand designation, and equivalent ISO VG 68 vacuum pump oils from reputable manufacturers are acceptable alternatives. Using any oil with a viscosity significantly above or below this rating risks both lubrication failure and sealing film breakdown.


DVP Vacuum Pump Oil Grades: What to Use in Commercial Sealers

DVP is an Italian pump manufacturer whose rotary vane pumps are commonly fitted in Henkelman Boxer series, Sirman Easyvac, and Orved chamber sealers. DVP specifies vacuum pump oil rather than general-purpose lubricants, and the ISO VG 68 classification applies here as well.

DVP pump oil service intervals follow a similar pattern to Busch: approximately every 500 operating hours under normal conditions, with visual oil inspection recommended at each use for high-volume operations. DVP pumps have a visible oil sight glass on most models, which allows the operator to check oil level and colour without opening the pump. Darkening of the oil indicates oxidation and particulate accumulation. Milky or cloudy appearance indicates moisture emulsification and requires immediate attention.

The oil reservoir on DVP pumps is accessible via a drain plug at the base of the pump body and a fill point at the top. Capacity varies by pump model, but most single-phase DVP pumps used in mid-range chamber sealers hold between 0.5 and 1.0 litre of oil. Overfilling causes oil mist ejection through the exhaust filter and should be avoided.


Step-by-Step Oil Drain Procedure for Chamber Sealer Rotary Vane Pumps

Carrying out an oil change requires the pump to be at operating temperature so that contaminants held in suspension drain with the oil rather than remaining in the sump.

Preparation: Run the pump for 10 to 15 minutes before draining. Ensure the machine is switched off and isolated from the electrical supply before accessing the pump.

Drain: Place a suitable container under the pump drain plug. Remove the drain plug carefully, as the oil may be warm. Allow the oil to drain fully, including any residual oil from the pump chamber internals.

Inspect: Examine the drained oil. Dark but translucent oil indicates normal oxidative degradation. Milky or emulsified oil indicates moisture contamination. Metallic particles in the oil indicate vane or rotor wear and require pump internal inspection before refilling.

Flush (if contaminated): For moderately contaminated pumps, a short flush run using a small quantity of fresh pump oil is useful before the final fill. Add a small volume of fresh oil, run the pump briefly, then drain again before the full oil charge.

Refill: Add oil to the correct level as indicated by the sight glass or fill mark on the oil reservoir. Do not exceed the maximum fill level.

Exhaust filter: Check the oil mist separator or exhaust filter at each oil change. A saturated exhaust filter increases back-pressure on the pump and reduces pump efficiency. Replace the filter if it shows discolouration or restriction.


When Oil Maintenance Is Not Enough

If oil changes are being carried out at correct intervals but vacuum performance continues to decline, the pump requires internal inspection. Vane wear reduces the pressure differential the pump can achieve and presents as extended cycle times and failure to reach the vacuum level set on the control panel.
