Fixing Cloudy Pump Oil: Identifying Moisture Contamination in Your Commercial Vacuum Sealer

Milky or cloudy pump oil is one of the clearest diagnostic indicators available on a commercial chamber sealer, and it signals a specific problem: water has entered the pump oil reservoir and emulsified with the oil. This condition, if left unaddressed, leads to accelerated vane wear, reduced vacuum performance, and ultimately pump seizure. Why Pump Oil Turns Milky White in High-Humidity Environments

Rotary vane pump oil becomes milky when water content exceeds the oil’s ability to hold moisture in solution. The process is called emulsification: water droplets become suspended in the oil, scattering light and creating the characteristic white or grey-white colouring. In a correctly maintained pump, a brief warm-up period before sealing cycles begin allows residual moisture from the previous session to evaporate and exit through the exhaust system. When this warm-up does not happen, or when the pump is processing large volumes of moist product packaging, the moisture accumulation outpaces the oil’s capacity to manage it.

Coastal environments significantly accelerate this process. A chamber sealer operating in a Walvis Bay or Swakopmund kitchen draws ambient air on every cycle. That air carries substantially more moisture than the air in an inland location such as Windhoek or Keetmanshoop. The result is faster oil degradation, shorter service intervals, and a higher probability of emulsification between scheduled oil changes. Diagnosing Moisture Ingress in Henkelman and Multivac Chamber Units

Henkelman Boxer and Jumbo series machines fitted with DVP or Busch oil-sealed pumps have an oil sight glass that allows visual inspection without disassembly. Checking this sight glass at the start of each operating day is the most reliable early-warning practice available to the operator.

The progression of moisture contamination typically follows this pattern: the oil darkens first as oxidative degradation proceeds normally, then becomes slightly hazy as moisture begins to accumulate, and finally turns milky or grey-white as emulsification becomes significant. At the milky stage, the pump oil has lost substantial lubricating and sealing film capacity.

For Multivac form-fill-seal and tray sealer systems, oil inspection follows the same visual principle, but these machines often have more complex pump systems that require technician access for correct assessment. If you are unsure whether the pump oil condition on your machine represents normal ageing or active moisture contamination, compare the colour and clarity against fresh oil of the correct grade.

Beyond visual inspection, the functional sign of pump moisture contamination is vacuum decay. A pump running emulsified oil will take longer to reach the target vacuum level, and the vacuum level may not stabilise at the correct set point. Extended cycle times and reduced seal quality are the operational consequences of running a moisture-contaminated pump.


Purging Moisture from a Rotary Vane Pump Without Full Disassembly

For pumps where moisture contamination is recent and has not yet caused mechanical damage, a controlled purge procedure can restore the oil to serviceable condition without requiring full pump disassembly.

Step 1: Warm up the pump. Run the pump for 20 to 30 minutes under load before draining. Higher operating temperature helps to drive moisture out of the oil in vapour form through the exhaust system. This reduces the volume of emulsified oil requiring drainage.

Step 2: Drain while warm. With the machine isolated from mains power, drain the oil while it is still at operating temperature. Emulsified oil is more fluid when warm and drains more completely. Allow the drain to continue until the flow stops.

Step 3: Assess the drained oil. The volume and appearance of the drained oil indicates how advanced the contamination is. If the oil is heavily emulsified throughout, a flush run is recommended before the final fill.

Step 4: Flush run. Add a small quantity of fresh ISO VG 68 pump oil, approximately 20 to 25 per cent of the normal fill volume, and run the pump for 5 minutes with the exhaust open. This carries residual contaminated oil out of the pump internals. Drain this flush oil completely.

Step 5: Refill to correct level. Add fresh pump oil of the correct grade and viscosity to the marked fill level. Do not overfill, as excess oil is ejected through the oil mist separator and exhaust filter.

Step 6: Extended warm-up. After the refill, run the pump for 15 minutes before beginning sealing cycles. This allows any remaining moisture to evaporate and exit through the exhaust.


When Purging Is Not Sufficient

If the pump continues to produce elevated moisture contamination after oil service, the root cause may be a fault beyond the oil system. A failed check valve or inlet filter that is allowing product moisture to back-flow into the pump during the cycle will cause recurring contamination. Similarly, a pump that has been running heavily emulsified oil for an extended period may have vane wear that requires internal inspection.

A pump showing signs of vane damage, reduced ultimate pressure despite correct oil condition, or unusual mechanical noise during operation requires a more detailed Busch vacuum pump repair assessment or equivalent service for DVP and other pump brands.
