Washing Machine Leaking: Identifying the Source and the Repair

Why Finding the Source Matters Before Doing Anything Else

A washing machine leak presents differently depending on where it originates. Water appearing at the front of the machine during a cycle means something different from water found pooled underneath after the cycle has finished. Water that appears only during the fill phase has a different cause from water that appears during drainage. Identifying where the leak is coming from, and when in the cycle it occurs, is the first and most important step, because different sources require entirely different repairs.

Attempting to address a leak without confirming the source risks replacing a component that is not responsible while the actual fault continues. Our technicians approach leak diagnosis by mapping the symptom to the cycle phase and the location, then confirming the source through direct inspection before recommending a repair.


Common Leak Sources

Door Seal (Door Gasket)

The door seal is the rubber gasket that forms a watertight barrier between the door glass and the drum opening. It is the most common source of leaks on front-loading machines and produces water at the front of the appliance during the wash cycle. Door seal leaks are usually caused by physical damage, a split or tear in the rubber from a sharp object in the wash, or damage from items being forced past the gasket. They can also result from mould degradation that has eaten through the seal wall, or from a seal that has become deformed or displaced from its retaining track.

A leaking door seal is a direct component replacement. The old seal is removed and a new one fitted to the drum opening. Seal availability varies by brand and model, and for less common machines in Namibia the part may need to be sourced from outside the country.

Drum Rear Seal

The rear drum seal sits between the rotating drum and the outer tub at the back of the machine, in front of the drum bearing assembly. When this seal fails, water escapes from the rear of the drum into the machine base during every wash cycle. A failed rear drum seal will almost always coincide with drum bearing damage, since water that bypasses the rear seal reaches the bearing surfaces directly. Drain Pump Housing and Pump Filter Cap

Water appearing underneath the machine, particularly towards the front-lower area, may originate from the drain pump housing or from a pump filter cap that has not been reseated correctly after cleaning. A cracked pump housing is uncommon but does occur, typically as a result of debris impact or age-related brittleness. A filter cap that has been cross-threaded or not fully tightened after maintenance will leak during every drain cycle.

Sump Hose

The sump hose connects the outer tub to the drain pump. It is secured at each end by a spring or screw clip and can develop leaks at the connection points as the clips weaken with age or the hose perishes. A sump hose leak typically produces water underneath the machine during or after the drain phase.

Inlet Valve and Inlet Hose Connections

A faulty inlet valve can leak in two ways: externally, at the valve body or at the hose connection, or internally, by failing to close fully and allowing water to continue entering the drum when it should not. External valve leaks produce water at the rear of the machine during the fill phase. Internal valve leaks cause the drum to overfill slowly, which may eventually produce water from the door seal area or trigger an overfill fault code.

Inlet hose connections at both the machine end and the tap end are also worth checking before assuming an internal valve fault. Connections that have loosened slightly over time will produce a minor drip that becomes more evident under fill pressure.

Detergent Drawer and Detergent Dosing

Water escaping from the detergent drawer area, or from the top-front of the machine during the wash phase, is often related to excessive detergent use. Non-HE (high efficiency) detergents, or excessive quantities of any detergent, generate foam levels that the machine cannot manage. Foam backs up through the dispenser system and exits via the drawer housing. This is not a mechanical fault in the machine but it produces symptoms that look like a component failure. Switching to correct HE detergent at the manufacturer-recommended dose typically resolves it. If the problem persists after correcting detergent use, the dispenser housing or the water inlet to the dispenser may have a fault.


When to Bring the Machine In

If the leak source is not immediately obvious, or if the leak is internal and is producing water in the machine base, workshop diagnosis is the appropriate next step. Leaks that are allowed to continue cause progressive damage: water in the machine base can damage the control board, corrode wiring connectors, and accelerate bearing failure if it reaches the rear of the drum housing.
